3 Poems by Evan Laffer

dog people

for things that can eat you

there is dread or respect

for their dogs

the dog people

feel neither

to think

it can’t kill me

of something you love

what is that

what else can’t it do?

standards

beyond April

beyond Paris

and this moment

where I know them again

you don’t worry

so I worry for you

that one day no one will ask

what was april

what was paris

what were they together

the beach

I LOVE THE BEACH

a sign on the door

screams in cursive

to no one

birds

think all fish

live near the surface

and it’s true enough

not to matter
